The new JioFi 4G hotspot comes with an OLED display, slightly larger battery compared to JioFi 2 and carries the same price tag of Rs 1,999.
The Reliance Jio ‘Welcome Offer’ has already caused a storm across the nation, with people standing in queues outside Reliance Digital and Reliance Digital Xpress mini stores to get a connection. And while SIM cards still remains unavailable, the company has quietly introduced a new JioFi 4G hotspot device with an OLED display and slightly larger battery. With limited availability in select cities, the new JioFi device is being sold for Rs 1,999, which is the same as the existing JioFi 2.
While the device is not listed on Reliance Jio website, Twitter user IamRaghvendraS has shared some photos of the device and its packaging. To begin with, it now comes in a cylindrical box. The device is a bit narrower, but slightly larger in size than the JioFi 2. The front panel has an OLED display on the top, which shows the battery icon with percentage, Jio 4G signal bars and Wi-Fi icon with signal bars. Below this there is also a small strip to display notifications. One of the issues we had with the JioFi 2 was the glossy finish, which in just two days of usage had attracted a lot of scratches. Thankfully, the new JioFi device now comes with a matte finish that could help to keep scratches away. Interestingly, the back of the device reads ‘Designed in India.’
While the JioFi 2 is equipped with a 2,300mAh battery, the new JioFi device comes with a slightly larger 2,600mAh battery, which the company claims to offer up to five hours of continuous usage. You still get a microSD card slot with support for up to 32GB and support for HD voice calling using JioJoin app on Android smartphones. One of the downsides is that while JioFi 2 allows you to connect up to 31 devices at once, the new JioFi only lets you connect up to 10 devices. However, that shouldn’t be a big concern for most users.
To purchase the new JioFi 4G hotspot device, you’ll have to walk in the any Reliance Digital or Reliance Digital Xpress mini stores with valid documents – such as a passport size photograph, an address proof such as Aadhar card or Passport, and an ID proof such as driving license, PAN card or voter ID card. Upon submitting documents, you will get a SIM card. Do note that the device is available in select cities and with the SIM card scarcity, you may not get one instantly. It would be a good idea to enquire about the same before buying. Once the verification is done, you will get an SMS on your secondary contact number, after which you will then have to dial 1800-890-1977 to activate the data services.
While Reliance Jio is offering ‘Welcome Offer’ benefits to new users, it isn’t clear if JioFi users get the same benefits or the earlier ‘Preview Offer’ with virtually unlimited 4G data for a period of 90 days from activation. Also, while the company has revealed its plans starting at Rs 19 per day to Rs 4,999 for 28 days with a range of data benefits, unlimited voice calls and SMS, tariff plans of JioFi aren’t revealed yet. Reliance Jio might unveil then one the proper rollout begins.
