How to Use Windows’ File History to Back Up Your Data

File History is Windows 10’s main backup tool, originally introduced in Windows 8. Despite the name, File History isn’t just a way to restore previous versions of files–it’s a fully-featured backup tool.
After you set up File History, you can just connect an external drive to your computer and Windows will automatically back up your files to it. Leave it connected and Windows will back up automatically on a schedule.

How to Enable File History

Click or tap the “Add a drive” option under Back up using File History to add an external drive that File History will back up to. It’ll list external drives and give you the option to back up to them.
File History is designed to be quick and easy to enable, unlike other complex backup tools. To enable it, first connect an external hard drive to your computer. Next, open the Settings app from your Start menu. Navigate to Update & Security > Backup.
You could also use the Control Panel for this, but we’ll be covering the new Settings interface here. If you’d like to use the Control Panel instead (for example, if you’re still on Windows 8), open the Control Panel and navigate to System and Security > File History.
Select a drive, and Windows will use it for File History. The “Automatically back up my files” option will appear and be automatically turned on. Windows will automatically back up your files to the drive whenever you connect it to your computer.

How to Configure File History

Select “More options” to configure how often File History backs up, how long it keeps those backup copies, and–most importantly–which files it backs up.
File History automatically backs up your files every hour by default, but you can select a different time here. You can choose once every 10 minutes, 15 minutes, 20 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, 3 hours, 6 hours, 12 hours, or once per day.
It will normally keep your backups forever, but you can have it delete them when they become one month, 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, 1 year, or 2 years old. You can also have File History automatically delete backups as necessary to make space on your File History drive.
By default, File History will be set to back up back up important folders in your user account’s home folder. This includes the Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures, Videos folders. It also includes the Roaming folder where many programs store application data, your OneDrive folder, and other folders.
You can check the full list of folders in this window, and add more folders. Select “Add a folder” and you’ll be able to choose any folder on your computer to back up. You can also select a folder here and use the “Remove” button to prevent Windows from backing it up.
NOTE: In Windows 8, you do not have the option to add folders from File History–instead, you must add folders to a Library in order for them to be included.
You’ll also find an “Exclude these folders” section that allows you to exclude specific subfolders from being backed up. For example, you could have Windows automatically back up every folder in your Documents folder, but ignore one particular folder. In Windows 8, you’ll find this on the left-hand side of the File History window.
To start backing up to a different drive, use the “Stop using drive” button. This allows you to stop backing up to your current drive and start backing up to a new one. The backups won’t be deleted, but Windows can only be configured to back up to one drive at once.
The “See advanced settings” link here takes you to the Control Panel, which offers another interface you can use to configure File History. Click “Advanced Settings” here and you’ll find a few more options, including the ability to view recent errors in the Event Viewer, clean up old versions of files, and allow other computers that are part of your homegroup to back up to your drive.

How to Restore Files from Your Backup

To restore files from your external drive, open the Settings app, select “Update & security,” select “Backup,” select “More options,” scroll down to the bottom of the window, and select “Restore files from a current backup.”
You can also open the Control Panel, select “System and Security,” select “File History,” and click “Restore personal files.”
(If you have File History backups you created on another computer, just set up File History on the new computer and select the drive containing your old File History backups. They’ll then appear in the Restore Files interface so you can restore files, just as you could if the backup was created on the current computer.)
This interface will allow you to view your backups and restore files. Browse the available files and select one or more files or folders. You can preview them by right-clicking them or select them and click the green button to restore them to your computer.
To choose a time period, click the arrow buttons or the panes at the side of the window. You’ll also be informed how many different backup time periods are available. For example, in the screenshot below, the “2 of 3” at the top of the window indicates there are three available backups, and we’re viewing the second one. There’s one older backup available, as well as one newer one.

How to Restore Files From Within File Explorer

You can also quickly restore a previous version of a file from File Explorer. Open File Explorer, right-click the file you want to revert, and click “Restore previous versions.” You can also click “Properties” and then select the “Previous Versions” tab.
Any available previous versions of the file from File History will be available here. You can preview them, restore one to its original location, or restore a previous version to a different location on your computer.
You can also view previous versions and deleted files that were in a specific folder. To do this, navigate to the folder in File Explorer, click the “Home” tab on the ribbon bar at the top of the window, and click “History.”
You’ll be presented with a list of files you can restore that were once in the folder. This is the same interface you’d use when restoring files normally, but File Explorer allows you to start from within a specific folder to speed things up.

File History is a very simple and useful backup option, and for it’s completely free. Windows 10 also allows you to create a system image backup if you want a full backup copy of your operating system state. This isn’t the ideal solution for backing up your files–even if you make system image backups, you should be creating more frequent backups of your important files with File History–but some geeks may find it useful if they’re playing with the Registry or other system files.

Run Windows 98, Linux, KolibriOS inside your web browser using javaScript And NodeJS

With time, JavaScript engines have grown to become faster and more powerful than ever. Demonstrating the same, a coder has created an online program that emulates x86-compatible CPU and hardware. Using the same, you can run Windows 98 right now in your browser.
The coder writes on his project’s page on GitHub that he decided to work on this as a fun project and learn more about x86 architecture. With some more work, he got Linux and KolibriOS working to make this more usable. Running on top of an x86-emulator in JavaScript, the OS is fast enough to open the programs in your browser.
Apart from a smooth performance of Windows 98 — yes, you are allowed to play a quick game of Minesweeper — Linux works pretty well. Talking about KolibriOS, this graphical OS runs well and takes about 60 seconds to boot. Windows 1.01, FreeDOS, Arch Linux, and Solar OS are also on the menu.
Before you go ahead and run the emulations via following links, here’s a note: Don’t forget to lock the mouse using the lock mouse button at the top.

Facebook making a map of every building in the world

Facebook is making a map of every human-occupied building on Earth to track the people in the most remote areas of the world and how that affects their internet connections. About 10 percent of the world’s population still lives in remote or rural areas without internet connectivity.
This new mapping project is part of Facebook’s Internet.org Connectivity Lab, which announced this week that it has created new, high-resolution population-distribution maps of 20 countries, most of which are developing. The group is tasked with using drones, satellites, and lasers to improve internet access in rural areas and developing countries.
Robert Chen, director of Columbia’s Center for International Earth Science Information Network, believes the maps will have many uses beyond Internet access projects. “These higher resolution data will be useful in optimizing the location of health and sanitation facilities, planning energy and transportation networks, improving resource management and access, and facilitating humanitarian assistance,” he says.
Few months ago, Facebook’s Connectivity Lab took up this project along with the company’s data science division, infrastructure unit, and machine learning and artificial intelligence groups. The company covered 21.6 million square kilometres across 20 countries, including India, Mexico, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, and several other African nations, which accounted for 14.6 billion images (over 350TB of data) and analysed this graphical data to find evidence of human settlements.
The company used regular visual processing techniques including the image-recognition engine Facebook uses to recognize people’s faces in photos and used deep learning to store data about human built structures.
“The main aim of this project was to determine what Internet connection technique (mobile data or WiFi hotspots) is for bringing people online that would significantly increase the website’s traffic. Our goal is to figure out how we can develop technologies and understanding how we can connect every person on the planet,” said Yael Maguire, the director and head of Facebook’s Connectivity Lab. “If we want to think about the best technology to connect people — especially outside of the cities, this is a very misleading piece of information.”
Currently, the social media giant is developing drones which would be able to beam internet signals down to remote areas without wireless access; this map will also help inform the company where to use this technology.
On Monday, Facebook Founder-CEO Mark Zuckerberg at the World Mobile Convention said that the social media giant plans to make the project open to the public this year.
“We believe this data has many more impactful applications, such as socio-economic research and risk assessment for natural disasters,” Facebook wrote in its blog. It is also working with Columbia University’s Center for International Earth Science Information Network to release its new maps so that other companies and organizations can use them too.

Sony launches xperia x series

Sony Launches Xperia X Series — All You Need to Know

In a bit of a surprise announcement, Sony has unveiled a “new look Xperia brand” with the Xperia X series of smartphones. Fitting along with the current theme of MWC 2016, these new Xperia devices are made more capable with the addition of smart accessories, giving us “ambient connected devices capable of changing the way users interact with the world”.

Starting off, the devices launched are the Xperia X, the Xperia X Performance and the Xperia XA. All of these devices will be available in Dual SIM variants in addition to the normal Single SIM variants, so Sony is offering a choice to those who prefer.

The Xperia X series smartphones fit in with Sony’s unified design concept, and as such, can be easily recognized as being one with the Xperia pack. The X series notably includes a curved glass display on a metallic frame, giving the devices the premium look and feel of top tier flagships.

While the Xperia X, the Xperia X Performance and the Xperia XA may look and sound similar, they do have differences on the inside and outside as well. Here’s a quick comparison table listing the specs of all three devices:

Android Version Android 6.0 Marshmallow Android 6.0 Marshmallow Android 6.0 Marshmallow

Talking about the peculiarities of each device, the Xperia X and the Xperia X Performance feature some interesting camera technology. Not only do these sport hybrid autofocus in the form of PDAF, they also feature Predictive Autofocus, which was developed in close collaboration with Sony’s α camera engineers. This new tech lets one choose their subject and then predicts its motion, which promises to deliver blur-free imagery of even moving subjects.

The Xperia X Performance, as its name implies, is a performance-oriented device and bears a chip that can bear all of that load. The Snapdragon 820 present inside the X Performance means that the device is capable of giving competition to flagships of 2016, despite not being a completely top-tier flagship device either. The Xperia X on the other hand, bears the Snapdragon 650 (which is the renamed Snapdragon 618), so performance wise, the device is placed in the mid end. The same can be said about the Xperia XA as well, thanks to the Helio P10.

All the three Xperia X devices also come with Qnovo Adaptive Charging Technology, which boasts to be a breakthrough as far as smartphone batteries are concerned. Qnovo promises reduced charge times, but also promises an increase in battery lifetimes, which is something that rival Quick Charge tech does not promise. The new Xperia will have drastically better battery lifetimes of around 800 charge cycles before the battery starts to lose capacity, which is a significant increase against the standard 500 charging cycles that one assumes in today’s smartphones.

The Xperia XA does have one distinguishing factor: it sports an edge to edge display, bearing virtually no side bezels. The screen size is also a manageable 5″, so it will be interesting to see how practical and useable a bezel-less display is on a normal sized device instead of a phablet.

The Xperia X series smartphones have a little in them for every need. Sony has not released any pricing or availability details for these, but based on Sony’s past records, the devices will ask for a slightly premium price when compared to its competitors.

A lot of the focus, again, was on the connected devices aspect to the smartphone. Sony has provided us with more concepts and even a working product of how connected devices will enrich and enhance the smartphone experience in 2016.

Firstly, there is the Xperia Ear, which is a wireless earpiece that utilizes Sony’s voice technology. The earpiece will provide useful information such as the weather, your schedule and even the latest news. The device can also work with verbal commands, which you can leverage for a more complex hands-free experience. There’s also the RM-X7BT in-car Bluetooth commander which enables wireless music streaming and uses Sony’s voice tech to activate smartphone functions whilst driving.

Sony also gave us a preview of a few concepts that they are working on. The Xperia Eye is a 360 degree camera which can be worn; the Xperia Projector is a projector which will respond to touch gestures as well as voice, allowing for smartphone like interaction; while the Xperia Agent is a personalised assistant aimed at enhancing everyday life. These are still concepts with no release date attached to them.

The Sony Xperia X, Xperia X Performance and the Xperia XA will be available in White, Graphite Black, Lime Gold and Rose Gold colors. Sony mentions that the devices will be available from Summer 2016, which translates into June-July for us outside of the USA. This is a very surprising move by Sony as the devices may not be as lucrative in the ~4 months from launch till public release. Even the Xperia X Performance, which packs in the SD-820 with a 5″ display may get a competitor which the public can buy earlier.

The Xperia X series devices have certainly surprised us in early 2016. We hope that Sony keeps a manageable and affordable pricing scenario on all of these, which would be crucial for their success.

Hacker explains how he put backdoor on Linux Mint downloads

Well now, in an encrypted chat on Sunday, the person responsible for the hack, who goes by the name “Peace,” told ZDNet that a “few hundred” Linux Mint installs were under their control, which turns out to be a substantial portion of the thousand-plus downloads during the day.
Peace also went on to state that a complete copy of the site’s forum was stolen by him twice: the first one on January 28, and the second one which was the most recent on February 18, just two days before the hack was established.
The hack affected not only the forum usernames, but also passwords (encrypted), email addresses, birthdates, profile pictures, any information in the signature and any information posted on forums, including private messages and private topics. The hacker claims to have cracked some of the passwords already with many more to be cracked in the pipeline. (It’s assumed that the site used PHPass to hash the passwords, which can be cracked.)
Clement Lefebvre, leader of the Linux Mint project confirmed on Sunday that the forum had been breached. He said “It was confirmed that the forums database was compromised during the attack led against us yesterday and that the attackers acquired a copy of it. If you have an account on forums.linuxmint.com, please change your password on all sensitive websites as soon as possible.”
In fact, the hacker had put the forum database (Linuxmint.com shell, php mailer, and full forum dump) on a dark web marketplace for sale for a meagre amount of $85 (about 0.197 bitcoin).
Confirming that the listing was theirs, Peace said jokingly, “Well, I need $85.”
On Sunday, it was announced that about 71,000 accounts (which is less than half of all accounts included in the database) were loaded into breach notification site HaveIBeenPwned. If you think you may have been affected by the breach, you can search its database for your email address.
While Peace said that they lived in Europe and had no association to hacking groups, he refused to provide information such as their name, age, or gender.
In January, Peace was “just poking around” the site when they discovered a vulnerability that allowed them to access it without any authorization. (The hacker also mentioned that they had credentials to log in to the site’s admin panel as Lefebvre, however, was hesitant to describe how it turned out to be useful again.) The hacker then on Saturday swapped one of the 64-bit Linux distribution images (ISO) with one that was modified by adding a backdoor, and afterwards made a decision to “replace all mirrors” for every downloadable version of Linux on the site with a modified version of their own.
The hacker said that as the code is open-source, the backdoored version is not that hard as one would think. It just took them just a few hours to repack a Linux version that contained the backdoor.
The files were then uploaded to a file server situated in Bulgaria by the hacker, which took the longest “because of slow bandwidth.”
The best way to get users to download the backdoored version on the website is by changing the checksum (used to authenticate the reliability of a file) on the website with the checksum of the backdoored version.
The hacker said, “Who the f**k checks those anyway?”
Known to work alone, the hacker in the past has provided private exploit services for known susceptibilities services on private marketplace sites that they are connected to.
The first hacking episode began in late January, but increased when they “started spreading the backdoored images early morning [Saturday],” the hacker said.

Developer Billy Ellis Hacked Apple Watch To Run OS X Yosemite Simulator.

Billy Ellis, the 15-year old developer who previously hacked Apple Watch running iOS 4.2.1, has come-up with a new apple watch hack which allows the Developer to run OS X Yosemite Simulator .

The Yosemite Simulator for Apple Watch, as Ellis calls it, is an app that runs directly on the Apple Watch. It shows the Mac’s standard desktop on the watch’s tiny screen along with the familiar icons for the Finder, Launchpad, Settings, the App Store and Trash.

The proof-of-concept software serves to demonstrate what can be achieved on the Apple Watch with a little bit of imagination and some superb coding skills.

“Haven’t had the time to make everything fully functional just yet,” said Ellis. “Hopefully I’ll add some more to it later this week.”

“The reason why I create these apps is really just to show people how certain things could look/work on such a small device,” Ellis told Cult of Mac via e-mail.

“So they are really just fun concepts that allow people to see how the Apple Watch could have been if Apple had decided to do things differently. Also, a lot of people seem to just love seeing unique apps and ideas that you wouldn’t find on the App Store.”
